Is Your Home Radioactive?

Is your house, your safe haven, your refuge actually a radioactive site? The answer is that nearly every home has contamination from a little known gas which is gaining a lot of recognition. This gas is known as radon and it is now the second most leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. We discussed this in a blog post titled "What's the Hype on Radon Mitigation About?". In this post we attempted to bring a lot of data and recent articles together in one easy place for our customers.

One of the questions that was asked by Sun Glow in this post was, "Should we be concerned?". Our answer was that it is our belief that any level of a radioactive material should be a concern to the health of our household. In one of Greenversations recent articles titled Radon: A Leading Environmental Cause of Cancer Mortality, Dr. Susan Conrath writes:

"Many people do not realize that radon is the number two cause of lung cancer in the U.S.; exceeded only by smoking. For never-smokers radon is the number one cause of lung cancer. Scientific studies have confirmed the risk and show no evidence that there is any “safe” level of radon.

As shown on our Health Risks Page radon-induced lung cancer deaths [at the U.S. average indoor air concentration of 1.3 picocuries/Liter of air [1.3pCi/L]] are in the same general range as deaths from leukemia and lymphoma and are greater than a number of selected cancers that we currently spend large amounts of money to research and/or combat."

We believe that the health officials said it best when they said they have confirmed the risk and show no evidence that there is any "safe" level of radon. This is why Sun Glow recommends that all households make the small investment (literally as low as $25/test kit) to test their homes for this radioactive gas.

The good news as we have discussed before is that you can easily test your home and find what your risk is. Kansas State University is listed throughout the EPA's website as a partner that sells testing kits to homeowners. You can purchase your testing kits online by following this link:

Once the testing is complete be sure to call Sun Glow no matter what the radon levels might be in your home. As an HVAC company on area of expertise is ventilation. Most of the radon concerns can be dealt with by means of proper crawlspace ventilation. Radon enters the home as the gas naturally rises from the earth into the home. If the crawlspace has proper ventilation, radon will be less likely to enter the home. It is time for the Athlete of the Week posting! You will notice that the format of this one is a little different. Sun Glow truly wants to see these student athletes recognized for their achievements and we spoke with the Clackamas Review and asked that they be certain the students parents are made aware of this achievement. When Financing Makes Sense

Is financing ever a good choice? Does it make sense to finance home improvement projects in this uncertain economic time? We believe that there are good times to finance and we hope to show a case for financing your HVAC system upgrades today.

In 2011 Sun Glow Heating and Air Conditioning teamed with Banner Bank to offer the Tri-County area excellent financing options to upgrade their heating and cooling systems with modern and efficient systems. We want to help our customers understand how this partnership helps them! In order to do this I would like to first introduce the Banner Bank program.

As can be seen from this flyer our customers have some excellent financing options. To recap this document we can see that if the project is:

On thing to note on the interest rates, which can be seen in the flyer, is that there is a 1% reduction for auto payment. In order to see how this financing package might work as a benefit we are going to create a hypothetical scenario with fictitious pricing . In our hypothetical situation, our three furnace options and pricing are:

Carrier 59SP5 Furnace: $4,900.00

Carrier 59TN6 Furnace: $6,500.00

Carrier 59MN7 Furnace: $6,900.00

Based upon these rates we can quickly and easily determine what our monthly payments are for these energy saving home upgrades. Each of the furnace model numbers is a hyperlink to Banner Bank's Online Loan Payment Calculator with all data input completed.

Carrier 59SP5 Furnace: $87.83/month or $1,053.96/year

Carrier 59TN6 Furnace: $65.50/month or $786.00/year

Carrier 59MN7 Furnace: $69.53/month or $834.36/year

The next step in this process is to compare potential energy savings with a Operating Cost Calculator supplied by Carrier Corporation. This calculator makes assumptions and individual results vary from household to household, however this helps our customers develop an understanding of potential savings*. Because existing furnaces can range in their modern day efficiency we have given three options. In these options existing furnace AFUE changes depending on maintenance history and age of the equipment:

AFUE 64%

AFUE 78%

AFUE 80%

In addition to annualized savings we also can't forget about the minor assistance made available to us through cash and tax credit incentives:

What's the Hype on Radon Mitigation About?

Portland Metro,

There has been quite a lot of discussion regarding radon and its deadly affects to our health. In addition to all of the articles and talk about radon, our local building codes changed last year to protect new homes from radon poisoning. While this is great for those who are buying new houses, what about the hundreds of thousands of existing homes in the Portland Metro area alone? What does this mean for our houses, our families, our loved ones? Should we be concerned? Should we/can we do something? I will try to answer these questions by turning to the experts known as the EPA.

Radon is a radioactive gas that you cannot smell, taste, hear, see, or feel. Yes that is correct another deadly gas that you cannot sense in any way. This gas is created from naturally decaying uranium that can be found everywhere in soil, rocks, and water. It can be a silent killer just like Carbon Monoxide only the killer is that it causes as many as 22,000 cases of lung cancer each year.

The question is, should we be concerned. We believe that the answer to this question is a resounding yes! While radon levels may not be extreme in the Portland Metro area, we would say that any kind of radioactive contamination in our homes is something of great concern. As can be seen in the map above, Multnomah County and Washington County both have moderate levels of radon potential while Clackamas County has a low potential. In our mind, having lost people close to us to cancer, any level of a radioactive gas in our homes is unacceptable. Our homes are to be a refuge and safe haven, not a place of contamination and poison.

Now that's an attention grabber! Today we are not speaking about individuality but rather the quality of a business. As individuals it is important to have a healthy self image. In business, our self image is reflected by what our customers think and say about us.

Hello Clackamas,

The holiday season is over! While I am sure that students are not as excited about this as parents are, it does mean that Sun Glow once again has the opportunity to highlight our high schools student athletes!

In 2012 I am going to try and stay ahead of the Clackamas Review and post the schools choice before the paper is actually out! How is that for timely news!
